New Year's Eve Dinner: A Complete Poon Choi Feast
12/02/2026
On the final evening of the Year of the Snake, residents and their families gathered to prepare a traditional pot dish.
Ingredients were sourced by the care home, with two residents assisting at the Red Market. After staff, including chefs, meticulously prepared ten auspicious ingredients, social workers explained the dish's origins and the symbolic significance of each component, fostering a cheerful atmosphere. As the pot dish assembly commenced, residents, family members and carers worked together in unison, layering ingredients into the pot from the base, middle and top tiers. Residents displayed palpable excitement and anticipation; upon enquiry, it emerged that the vast majority had never personally prepared a pot dish before. This “first-time” experience lent the activity a special significance.
Following the preparation, family members and residents savoured the feast they had created, expressing admiration for both their own achievements and the chef's masterful craftsmanship. On the final evening of the Year of the Snake, all shared this special moment within a warm and fulfilling atmosphere.
